Every single one of the Project 16:15 team is a volunteer. Whether they support us around work, family, childcare commitments, or on a fulltime/call out basis, they do it out of genuine compassion and commitment for those we are priviliged to serve, not for the reward of a pay packet. We have cooks, distributors, organisers, administration, servers, welfare, family and accomodation support, and of course our trustees. Being all volunteers can, and often does, provide issues for us to overcome, because the commitments of work, family and personal health must and do come first for every team member.
Project 16:15 started of as a one to one, breakfast in bed service for the rough sleepers. Our unique method of serving that most important of meals, directly to where the street community were waking up. set us apart from all other street provision. In 2019 we purchased our first vehicle, the Jiffy Truck. A fully equipped vehicle with oven, fridge and storage , which enabled us not only to reach more people, not only ensured that everything remained temperature controlled, not only made it possible to carry more variety. It also enabled us to step in during the eighteen months of lockdown, for every street service providor, drop in service and organisation that was forced to close up because of the pandemic. Our unique method gave us the means to expand from breakfast to lunch and dinner, seven days a week, ensuring that not one of those left out during that time, was missed or went hungry.
We have never been just about breakfast. Project 16:15's amazing team of volunteers are out seven days a week, at any given time of day or night, delivering much needed survival and hygiene equipment, clothes, footwear, water and many other practical needs. We also take the time to engage with those we are priviliged to serve, building those valuable relationships which in turn help us to not just signpost to other agencies, but also to be able to understand the direct needs faced and support them in finding the right solutions.
Project 16:15 is built upon the foundation that everyone stands equal in value and worth, everyone is deserved of respect and dignity, and everyone has the right to be treated with justice. What we do is a demonstration to every individual that they are worth enough for us to come. Our ethos is very clear, as long as there is but one person, who regardless of reason, feels that for them the street is all they have, then we will continue to go, to support, to encourage, to build up and speak out for. Project 16:15 does not hold to the mantra that we need to be cruel to be kind, or that this is a chosen lifestyle, because we understand addiction mentality, understand the burden of worthlesness such abstract poverty weighs a person down with, and we understand that its only by the dedicated perserverance of volunteers like ours, that the message of " your worth is beyond this" will begin to take root enabling the ability to see beyond the gutter and desire change.
At Project 16:15, we are not adverse to a bit of controversy, because for us the fight for justice, the fight for change at every level is worth it. We do not believe that any individual should be treated with less value, worth, dignity and respect than any other, and we will ensure that every voice is heard, regardless of the politics or the narrative preferred.
